Change Your Name on CPF in Brazil with Foreign Records

Change Your Name on CPF in Brazil with Foreign Records

If you need to change your name on CPF in Brazil after a marriage, divorce, birth registration or legal name change abroad, do not begin by ordering a translation or visiting the first Receita Federal office you find. Your correct starting point depends on whether you already hold a Carteira de Identidade Nacional (CIN), whether the foreign civil event has been registered or recognized in Brazil, and which database actually contains the error.

This distinction matters because CPF is now used as a central identification key across Brazilian public systems, but it is not an automatic update button. Correcting CPF or CIN data may remove a critical mismatch, yet your driver’s licence, vehicle registration, bank profile, Pix display name and social-security record can still require separate requests.

Key takeaways

  • If you already have a CIN: changes to identity fields such as your legal name, parentage, date of birth, place of birth or nationality generally begin with the state or Federal District civil identification authority that issues the CIN—not with a direct name-change request to Receita Federal.
  • If you do not have a CIN: Receita Federal generally remains the route for correcting CPF identity data. Its official CPF service is free, while listed partner units charge R$7.
  • A foreign certificate may not be the final source record: a Brazilian citizen’s marriage or other civil event abroad may first need consular registration, Brazilian civil-registry transcription or another recognition step.
  • Downstream records are not guaranteed to update automatically: check CNH, vehicle, bank, Pix, gov.br and INSS/CNIS records separately after the authoritative identity record is corrected.

Disclaimer: This is practical document-preparation information, not legal, tax or immigration advice. Requirements can vary by civil event, applicant status, receiving authority and state. Confirm the current checklist with the authority receiving your documents before paying for translation, apostille, legalisation or professional representation.

Who this guide is for

This Brazil-wide guide is for Brazilian citizens and foreign residents whose CPF or CIN data do not match a foreign birth certificate, marriage certificate, divorce judgment, civil-status certificate or legal name-change order. It is particularly relevant if you are handling English-, Spanish-, Italian-, German- or French-language records that must be used in Portuguese-speaking Brazilian systems.

Typical document combinations include a foreign civil certificate, an apostille or consular legalisation where applicable, proof connecting the old and new names, a passport or CRNM, a CPF registration record and an existing RG or CIN. The most difficult cases are rarely simple spelling corrections. They usually involve uncertainty about whether to start with a Cartório de Registro Civil, a state identification authority, Receita Federal or Polícia Federal—and what to do when a downstream database continues to show the old identity.

Before changing CPF data, identify the authoritative record

The safest sequence begins by asking: Which record legally proves the identity data that Brazil should adopt? A translation accurately communicates the contents of a foreign document, but it does not register a marriage, recognize a foreign judgment or legally change a name by itself.

  1. Identify the civil event. Was the change caused by marriage, divorce, adoption, a corrected birth record, naturalisation or a formal name-change order?
  2. Confirm whether the event needs a Brazilian registration or recognition step. This is especially important for Brazilian citizens whose civil event occurred abroad.
  3. Prepare the authentication and translation required by the receiving authority. An apostille authenticates the relevant signature or seal; it neither translates the record nor enters it into a Brazilian database.
  4. Correct the controlling Brazilian identity record. For a CIN holder, that is generally the CIN/OIC route. Without a CIN, it is generally the CPF route through Receita Federal.
  5. Check and correct dependent records. Treat CNH, vehicle, bank and INSS updates as separate verification tasks.

For Brazilian citizens married abroad, the federal service on registering a marriage abroad explains that the marriage should be registered with a Brazilian consular post and subsequently transcribed at the competent First Civil Registry Office in Brazil to produce its full effects there. The resulting Brazilian certificate may be a more useful source record for a domestic identity update than the foreign certificate alone.

Divorces, adoptions and judicial name changes can follow different recognition rules. Do not assume that a translated foreign judgment is automatically ready for CPF or CIN use. If judicial recognition is involved, obtain advice from a Brazilian lawyer whose professional registration can be independently verified.

Where to change your name on CPF in Brazil: CIN or Receita?

This is the most important routing question in the entire process—and a counterintuitive change for people familiar with the older CPF system.

If you already hold a CIN

The personal identity fields in CPF must correspond to the CIN. Under the current Receita Federal framework, changes to fields such as legal name, social name, parentage, date of birth, sex, place of birth and nationality are handled through issuance of a new CIN by the competent Órgão de Identificação Civil (OIC). The OIC then transmits the corrected data to the CPF system. The rule is set out in the consolidated Instrução Normativa RFB nº 2.172/2024, as amended.

In practical terms, do not submit a direct Receita name-change request first if you already have a CIN. Find the official CIN service for your state or the Federal District, review its foreign-document checklist and arrange an appointment if required. State implementation differs in scheduling, biometric collection, document inspection and issuance fees, so a national guide cannot provide one reliable appointment timetable.

If you do not hold a CIN

Receita Federal generally remains the correct route for changing CPF identity data. The official Atualizar CPF service supports online and assisted channels and explains the documents that may be requested. Official direct service is free; listed partner units charge R$7. The same page warns that an intermediary is unnecessary.

If an online request produces a service protocol rather than an immediate result, follow the instructions for submitting evidence or attending an appointment. Complex foreign-document cases can require manual review. The government does not publish a dependable nationwide completion time for every foreign civil-record correction, so do not build a CNH appointment, property closing or benefit deadline around an unverified 24- or 48-hour promise.

Updates that still belong with Receita Federal

Contact details, address information and CPF status corrections remain within the Receita route even for many CIN holders because they do not alter the core civil identity represented by the CIN. Also remember that a CPF status of Regular means the registration is not in a listed irregular status; it does not prove that every name, date or parentage field is current.

When foreign records need apostille, legalisation or tradução juramentada

International users often search for a “certified translation,” but the more precise Brazilian term is tradução juramentada or tradução pública. It is produced by a Tradutor e Intérprete Público registered through a Brazilian Junta Comercial.

Receita Federal’s governing instruction says that officials may require apostille or consular legalisation of a foreign record and a sworn translation of a foreign-language document. That conditional wording is important. Not every CPF correction involves an identical authentication and translation package.

When a Brazilian public translation is required, verify the translator’s name, registration number and authorised language through the official DREI translator information and the relevant Junta Comercial. A polished website or a generic “certified translator” statement is not evidence of Brazilian public-translator registration.

The translation scope should be checked page by page. Include reverse-side endorsements, seals, handwritten amendments, finality statements and attached apostille or legalisation pages when they form part of the evidentiary chain. For a concise explanation of related document forms, see CertOf’s guide to certified copies, certified translations and notarized copies. Electronic delivery questions are covered separately in the guide to electronic certified translation formats.

CPF correction and the downstream identity-update sequence

Once the authoritative civil record and CPF/CIN data are correct, use the following matrix as a planning tool. It reflects common data dependencies, not a single statute imposing an identical order in every state and institution.

Typical sequence for correcting Brazilian identity and downstream records
Record What should usually be correct first What to expect next
CIN Accepted civil source record The state OIC issues a replacement CIN and transmits identity data to CPF.
CPF without CIN Identity document and evidence supporting the correction Submit through Receita Federal and retain the protocol and updated proof.
CRNM Foreign national’s legally supportable name or nationality record Request a separate replacement through Polícia Federal; CPF and CRNM are not the same procedure.
CNH Updated identity and CPF/CIN data Use the name-change service of the state Detran; appointment, biometrics and fees vary by state.
Vehicle record Owner’s identity record and, where required, CNH data Check the Detran vehicle service separately; changing CNH does not reliably replace a vehicle-owner correction.
Bank and Pix Correct CPF/CIN or CRNM data Ask each institution to update its KYC profile and verify the name displayed for Pix.
INSS/CNIS Correct identity and CPF data Submit “Atualizar Cadastro e/ou Benefício” in Meu INSS and upload supporting records if requested.

CNH and vehicle records

CNH and vehicle administration is implemented by state Detrans within the national traffic framework. A Detran may require an updated CIN or RG, CPF evidence and the civil certificate that caused the change. It may also require a new photograph, signature or biometric collection. Vehicle-owner data can be handled by a different department or service from driver data.

For that reason, “CPF first, CNH second, vehicle third” is a useful dependency check, but not a nationwide statutory formula. Confirm the current checklist and fee on your own state Detran’s official website before scheduling.

Bank accounts and Pix

Banks and payment institutions maintain their own customer-identification and anti-fraud records. Correcting CPF data gives you the authoritative data needed to challenge a mismatch, but it does not guarantee that every institution will immediately rewrite its customer profile.

Update each bank through its official app, branch or secure support channel. Keep the CPF/CIN confirmation, civil certificate and protocol. If the problem remains, use the bank’s SAC and then its ouvidoria.

Unresolved regulated banking issues can be taken to Procon, Consumidor.gov.br or the Banco Central complaint channel. Avoid sending full identity documents through unofficial WhatsApp numbers or links received in unsolicited messages.

INSS and CNIS

The official Atualizar Cadastro e/ou Benefício service covers name and other personal-data corrections. It is requested through Meu INSS, with telephone support through 135 if the system is unavailable. The published response stage can take up to 45 calendar days, which is relevant if a benefit, contribution record or password-recovery issue depends on the correction.

Do not wait until a benefit deadline to discover that CNIS still contains the old surname. After the CPF/CIN correction, review your Meu INSS profile and contribution extract, submit the update if needed, and retain the request number.

Costs, timing and scheduling realities in Brazil

  • CPF update: free through the official direct channels; R$7 at the partner units identified by the federal service page.
  • CIN replacement: appointment, evidence review, biometric steps and possible fees depend on the issuing state or Federal District.
  • Civil-registry transcription: fees and document review are governed through the competent registry and state fee structure.
  • Public translation: price and delivery depend on language, length, legibility, attachments and the registered translator. There is no reliable nationwide price for every language and record.
  • INSS: the update service is free, but the published response stage can extend to 45 calendar days.

There is no trustworthy national average for an identity correction involving foreign records. A simple online CPF edit and a case requiring consular registration, civil-registry transcription, public translation, a CIN appointment and multiple downstream corrections are not comparable.

Common Brazil-specific failure points

  • Starting at Receita despite already holding a CIN. Check the CIN/OIC route before submitting a federal CPF identity-field request.
  • Translating before confirming whether a Brazilian source certificate is needed. A Brazilian citizen’s foreign civil event may require registration or transcription first.
  • Submitting only the certificate front page. Authentication sheets, reverse stamps and amendments may be part of the evidence.
  • Using a foreign “certified translation” when the authority requires tradução juramentada. Confirm the required translator status before ordering.
  • Assuming “Regular” means “updated.” Verify the actual name and birth data used by the relevant service.
  • Assuming every downstream record will synchronise. Check Detran, banking and INSS records individually.

A city-specific example of how these records interact is available in CertOf’s Belo Horizonte foreign-document identity update guide. Translator verification in Minas Gerais is covered separately in the JUCEMG public-translator verification guide. Those pages illustrate local implementation; they do not replace the rules of another state.

Commercial document help: compare roles, not advertising

Commercial assistance options and their limits
Provider type Useful for What to verify Important boundary
Brazilian Tradutor e Intérprete Público Producing a tradução juramentada when the receiving authority requires Brazilian public translation DREI/Junta registration, authorised language, matrícula and final signature format The translator does not register the civil event or approve the CPF/CIN change.
CertOf document translation support Reviewing source pages, preserving layout, checking names and dates, preparing certified translations where that format is accepted, and managing revisions Confirm the receiving authority’s required translation form before ordering CertOf is not Receita Federal, an OIC, a Cartório or a legal representative and cannot guarantee official acceptance.
Brazilian OAB lawyer Foreign judgment recognition, disputed divorce status, adoption, court orders or contested civil-registry issues OAB registration, defined scope and written fee agreement Routine CPF and CIN administrative updates generally do not require a lawyer.

Official and public support channels

Where to obtain official help or escalate an unresolved correction
Resource Use it when Cost
Receita Federal / gov.br You do not hold a CIN, need a non-identity CPF update, or need to check CPF status and instructions Free directly; listed partner service R$7
State or Federal District OIC You hold a CIN and need to change a core civil-identity field State-dependent
Polícia Federal A foreign resident needs to replace a CRNM after a supportable name or nationality change Service-specific
Meu INSS / 135 INSS or CNIS continues to display outdated identity data Free
Fala.BR A federal service request is mishandled, delayed without explanation or associated with improper conduct Free
Bank SAC and ouvidoria A bank refuses or fails to update KYC or Pix-linked customer data Free
ANPD titular petition You first asked a public or private data controller to correct inaccurate personal data but did not receive a satisfactory response Free

Fraud and document-safety warnings

Receita Federal states that intermediaries are not needed for the CPF update service. Treat claims of an “inside contact,” guaranteed accelerated approval or an exclusive Receita translation provider as warning signs. No translation company can lawfully promise that an OIC, registry, Detran, bank or INSS reviewer will approve a particular record.

Before sharing civil certificates, confirm the domain and recipient. Redact unrelated financial information where the receiving checklist permits it, use secure upload systems, and keep copies of every file submitted. For public translation, verify the individual translator’s registration instead of relying only on an agency logo or marketplace profile.

Frequently asked questions

Do I update my CPF through Receita Federal or the CIN issuing authority?

If you already hold a CIN and need to change a core identity field, begin with the competent state or Federal District OIC and request the appropriate CIN replacement. If you do not hold a CIN, Receita Federal generally handles the CPF identity correction. Address, contact and CPF-status changes remain separate from core civil-identity changes.

Can I change CPF data directly with a foreign marriage certificate?

Not always. A Brazilian citizen’s marriage abroad may first require consular registration and transcription in the competent Brazilian civil registry. A foreign resident’s route may instead involve the foreign certificate, authentication, translation and CRNM documentation. Confirm which source record the receiving authority requires.

Does every foreign record require an apostille and tradução juramentada?

Receita Federal’s rule allows officials to require apostille or consular legalisation and sworn translation. The exact requirement depends on the document, issuing country, applicable treaty, applicant and receiving authority. Confirm the checklist before ordering either service.

Why does my CPF show “Regular” if my name is wrong?

“Regular” describes the CPF registration status; it does not certify that every identity field is current. You can have a regular CPF while a surname, date of birth or parentage field still needs correction.

Will CPF correction automatically update CNH, vehicle, bank and INSS records?

Do not rely on automatic propagation. Check each database and use its correction procedure where the old data remains. CNH and vehicle services are state-administered, banks use separate KYC processes, and INSS provides its own update request through Meu INSS.

Can CertOf change my CPF or arrange a CIN appointment?

No. CertOf can assist with document translation, page-scope review, formatting, consistency checks and revisions. It does not act as Receita Federal, an OIC, Polícia Federal, a civil registry or a legal representative.

Prepare the translation packet before you submit

Upload the complete foreign civil record—including reverse pages, amendments, seals and attached apostille or legalisation pages—for a translation-scope review. Before ordering, identify whether your receiving OIC, Receita Federal channel, civil registry or Polícia Federal unit requires a Brazilian registered tradução juramentada or accepts another certified format.

Submit your documents to CertOf for translation preparation and consistency review. CertOf can help make the document set complete and readable, but the competent Brazilian authority decides the legal registration route and final acceptance.
