Colombia Visa Registration and Cédula de Extranjería After Visa Issuance
Updated for procedures and fees published in 2026. Receiving a Colombian e-Visa does not finish your immigration paperwork. If your visa is subject to registration, you must complete Colombia visa registration and the cédula de extranjería process through Migración Colombia. The difficult parts are often calculating the correct 15-calendar-day deadline, finding an appointment, distinguishing a visa error from a card-production error, and preparing a child’s foreign relationship records.
Disclaimer: This guide provides general document and procedural information, not Colombian legal advice. Immigration rules, appointment systems and fees can change. Confirm your visa annotation and current instructions with Cancillería or Migración Colombia.
Key takeaways
- The 15-day clock has two possible starting points. If your visa was issued while you were outside Colombia, count from your entry into Colombia. If it was issued while you were in Colombia, count from the visa’s issue date.
- The process is not fully online. You begin with the FUT form and a PDF containing your passport information page and visa, but normally finish in person at an authorized migration service center.
- Age changes the requirement. Children aged 0–6 register an applicable visa but do not receive a cédula; applicants aged 7–17 need a minor’s cédula; a new adult card is required after turning 18.
- Most adult first-time applicants do not need their passport or e-Visa translated. Official Spanish translation becomes relevant mainly for non-Spanish birth, family, guardianship or correction evidence.
Who this guide is for
This countrywide guide is for foreign residents who have already received a Colombian visa and now need to register it and obtain a cédula de extranjería. It covers adults applying for their first foreigner ID, parents or legal representatives handling an application for a child, and cardholders who need to correct or collect a document.
The usual adult file consists of a valid passport, e-Visa, FUT submission, appointment confirmation and an approved payment method. A family file may additionally contain a foreign birth certificate, family book, adoption record or guardianship order. English-to-Spanish is a useful example, but Portuguese, French, German, Chinese and other language pairs may arise whenever a supporting record is not in Spanish. No official source establishes which pair is most common.
This guide is particularly useful if you are unsure whether the deadline runs from approval, payment, entry or issuance; if appointment slots are unavailable; if a child’s surname differs from a parent’s; or if your finished card does not match your passport or visa. It does not cover the original visa application, PPT regularization or the everyday uses of the cédula.
Does your visa require registration and a cédula?
Migración Colombia’s current procedure applies to foreign visa holders or beneficiaries whose visa authorizes a stay exceeding three months, subject to visa-specific exceptions. Some V-category activities are exempt, so do not assume that every visitor visa produces a cédula obligation. Check the annotation and conditions on the e-Visa before starting.
For a visa that must be registered, the national Cédula de Extranjería procedure sets out the deadline, age bands, required documents, payment and estimated production time. Colombia uses national rules for this process; regional differences mainly concern appointment capacity, authorized service points and delivery logistics.
How the 15-calendar-day deadline works
| Where the visa was issued | Starting event | What to count |
|---|---|---|
| Outside Colombia | Your entry into Colombia | 15 calendar days from entry |
| While you were in Colombia | The e-Visa issue date | 15 calendar days from issuance |
This is a calendar-day period, not a business-day period. The approval message or visa-fee payment date is not automatically the controlling date. Read the field marked fecha de expedición and retain evidence of your entry when the visa was issued abroad.
Do not rely on FUT submission alone as proof that you met the deadline. Migración Colombia’s public procedure does not expressly say that filing the online form stops the 15-day clock when no appointment is available. Submit the FUT immediately, keep the radicado, try to schedule the in-person step promptly, and preserve dated screenshots showing unavailable appointments. Those records do not guarantee a favorable decision, but they can document your efforts if Migración asks about the delay.
Step-by-step Colombia visa registration and cédula workflow
- Check the e-Visa before doing anything else. Compare the name, passport number, nationality, birth date, sex and validity dates against the passport. A source error on the visa should be addressed with Cancillería, not left for the cédula appointment.
- Prepare one readable PDF. The standard initial upload contains the passport biographical page and valid visa. Do not crop names, passport numbers, machine-readable zones or validity dates.
- Submit the Formulario Único de Trámites. Save the FUT radicado, confirmation email and a copy of the uploaded file. The official cédula page links to the current FUT application, which is preferable to bookmarking a potentially changing application URL.
- Book the correct service point. Select a Centro Facilitador de Servicios Migratorios, or a PCM specifically authorized for foreigner services. An airport immigration booth is not automatically a cédula-processing office.
- Attend with the originals. Bring the original valid passport, valid visa and FUT number. The center verifies the record and completes the in-person identity or biometric stage.
- Pay through an authorized method. Payment may be made by debit or credit card at the service center or through the official bank-payment document issued there.
- Check production status before travelling to collect. The official estimate is ten business days from payment, but it is an estimate rather than a guaranteed delivery date.
- Inspect the card immediately. Compare every field with the passport and visa before the correction window closes.
Scheduling reality under the 2026 appointment model
Migración Colombia introduced daily appointment releases in April 2026. From Sunday through Thursday, available appointments for the next business day are released at 5:00 p.m. The agency reported approximately 150,000 appointments during 2025 and about 45,000 in the early part of 2026, illustrating why appointment capacity is a genuine operational issue. The current release model and its anti-intermediary purpose are described in Migración Colombia’s appointment-system announcement.
Use only the official booking system, enter the name and identity details exactly as shown in the passport, and check the confirmation before travelling. Migración Colombia warns that service may be refused when the appointment details do not match the documents presented. An appointment is free: a person selling a slot is not selling a government fee or an official priority service.
If no appointment appears within your 15-day window, keep the FUT confirmation and screenshots from each attempt. Do not invent a document number or book under another person’s details. If the problem continues, submit a written request through the official complaint and petition channel described below.
Documents and official Spanish translation
Standard adult first application
- Original valid passport;
- valid e-Visa;
- single PDF containing the passport information page and visa;
- FUT radicado and appointment confirmation;
- debit or credit card, or the official bank-payment instruction.
A routine adult application does not normally require translation of the passport or Colombian e-Visa. This is an important counterintuitive point: ordering a translation of every page can add cost without solving the actual registration requirement.
Children aged 7–17
The child must attend with a parent or legal representative. Migración Colombia requests evidence of the family or legal relationship, such as a foreign birth certificate, family book or equivalent representation record. Depending on the issuing country and document, an apostille or legalization may also be relevant.
Do not assume that every foreign relationship record follows the same translation formula. The cédula procedure asks for relationship evidence but does not prescribe one universal translation format for every issuing country. If the record is not in Spanish, confirm with the receiving CFSM whether it requires a traducción oficial al castellano. Where that requirement applies, use a Colombian-recognized traductor oficial and make sure the child’s and parents’ names reproduce the passport spellings exactly. A generic English-language certification statement should not automatically be treated as equivalent to Colombian official-translator status.
For broader preparation principles, see CertOf’s guides to who signs a certified translation certificate, certified translation quality checks and electronic certified translation formats. The existing Cali visa and cédula guide covers the city-specific context without turning this national workflow into a city-office directory.
Age rules that families often miss
| Age | Required action | Practical document issue |
|---|---|---|
| 0–6 | Register an applicable visa; no cédula is issued | Keep the child’s registration and relationship records organized |
| 7–17 | Apply for a minor’s cédula | Parent or representative must attend with relationship evidence |
| On turning 18 | Apply for a new adult cédula within 15 calendar days | Do not continue relying on the minor’s card for adult transactions |
If a child was registered before age seven, check the current instructions promptly as the seventh birthday approaches rather than waiting for another visa renewal.
Cost, payment and fraud prevention
The published general cédula fee for 2026 is COP 294,000. The first card for an Ecuadorian national is charged at the equivalent of USD 5, while qualifying Pacific Alliance scholarship holders pay no fee. Current amounts and exceptions appear on Migración Colombia’s official tariff page.
Officials are not authorized to receive cash. Pay by an approved card method or with the formal bank-payment document issued by the center. Avoid anyone requesting payment through a personal account, social-media message, cryptocurrency wallet or cash handoff. Neither a consultant nor a translator can create an official priority appointment or accelerate government production.
Production, collection and regional logistics
Migración Colombia publishes an estimated production time of ten business days after payment, while warning that geography, connectivity and access conditions can affect delivery. Do not schedule a bank, notarial or employment transaction on the assumption that the physical card will be available on the tenth day.
Check the official collection status before returning to the service center; the stable procedure page links to the current status application. Collection itself does not require another appointment or an intermediary. A third party may collect only with an authenticated special power of attorney and the representative’s original identity document. For a child, a parent or legal representative must bring the child’s passport and visa, the adult’s identity document and appropriate evidence of the relationship. Migración Colombia’s collection notice reported 2,992 completed cards awaiting collection in Bogotá in March 2025, showing why applicants should actively check status rather than wait indefinitely for a separate reminder.
Visa errors and cédula errors go to different agencies
If the e-Visa is wrong
Cancillería is responsible for the visa record. Its guidance gives the holder 15 calendar days after issuance to request correction of an e-Visa error; after that period, a visa transfer or reissuance route may be necessary. Check the current Cancillería visa guidance before submitting the FUT. Migración Colombia cannot reliably cure a source error that remains on the visa.
If the physical cédula is wrong
Migración Colombia handles discrepancies created in the card or foreigner record. Its current service page states that a request for replacement due to an inconsistency should be made within 30 calendar days after delivery. Prepare a written explanation, the card, passport and visa, plus any document that proves the correct information. If the supporting evidence is foreign and non-Spanish, ask whether an official Spanish translation is required.
What applicants report—and how much weight to give it
A historical r/Colombia discussion about appointment problems documented applicants’ concern about finding a slot within the 15-day period. A separate expatriate-service article about unavailable appointments described the same operational problem from a commercial service perspective. These are different source types, but both predate the April 2026 daily-release reform and neither establishes current processing time or the availability of a particular CFSM.
The official 2026 reform is stronger evidence of current nationwide demand than either historical account. Community and commercial reports can help identify practical questions, but they should not be used to conclude that another city will be faster or that an intermediary has privileged access.
Document translation providers for special cases
Most adult first-time applicants do not need a translation provider. The following options are relevant only when a CFSM requests an official Spanish translation of a relationship, guardianship, authorization or correction record. Inclusion is not an endorsement; verify the individual translator’s current certificate, authorized language pair, delivery format and revision policy.
| Provider | Public local signal | Relevant scope | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Universidad de Antioquia Translation and Interpretation Agency | Carrera 44 #48-72, Office 104, Medellín; telephone (604) 219 9879 | Official translation service for civil records, powers and legal documents; publishes English, French, Portuguese, Italian and Mandarin among its languages | Availability of an official translator for the exact pair and whether a digital copy is sufficient |
| Traductores e Intérpretes Asociados S.A.S. | Cra. 71D #97A-14, Bogotá | Publishes official-document translation services in Colombia | Name and certificate of the individual translator, immigration-document experience and correction terms |
| Glóssa Servicios Lingüísticos S.A.S. | Calle 140 #19-29, Office 402, Bogotá; 313 254 6458 / (601) 640 4215 | Publishes official translation and translator-credential information | Exact language pair, individual credential, physical-signature needs and quoted turnaround |
The Universidad de Antioquia and Universidad Nacional de Colombia publish credential-verification resources. Cancillería does not maintain or endorse a universal commercial translator directory, so a company name alone is not proof that the person signing your translation is qualified for the requested language pair.

When and how to complain
Use Migración Colombia’s PQRSDF channel when appointment failures, unexplained production delay, incorrect data or service conduct requires a formal record. Registering an account allows better tracking; an anonymous submission may be harder to follow.
Attach the FUT radicado, appointment attempts, payment receipt, passport and visa images, collection-status result and photographs of an incorrect card. State dates and the requested remedy clearly. Choose a complaint about official conduct only when that is the issue; use a petition or claim when you need information, correction or delivery action. A PQRSDF is not an unofficial fast-track service.
Common pitfalls
- Counting 15 days from the wrong event;
- assuming FUT submission completes the in-person requirement;
- booking under a name that does not match the passport;
- bringing a child without proof of the family or legal relationship;
- ordering a generic certified translation without confirming Colombian official-translator requirements;
- paying cash or purchasing an appointment from an intermediary;
- waiting for a collection message without checking online status;
- asking Migración to repair an error that already appears on the Cancillería-issued visa;
- failing to inspect the delivered card within the correction period.
Frequently asked questions
When does the 15-calendar-day period begin?
For a visa issued abroad, it begins when you enter Colombia. For a visa issued while you are in Colombia, it begins on the visa’s issue date.
Is submitting the FUT enough to meet the deadline?
The public procedure does not expressly promise that FUT submission alone stops the clock. Submit it early, schedule the in-person stage immediately and retain evidence if no appointment is available.
Do I need an official Spanish translation of my passport?
Normally not for a standard adult first application. Translation is more likely to be relevant for a non-Spanish birth certificate, family book, guardianship record, power of attorney or foreign correction evidence.
Can a child under seven receive a cédula?
Under the current age rules, children aged 0–6 complete applicable visa registration but are exempt from issuance of the cédula. From age seven, the minor’s cédula rules apply.
How much does the first cédula cost?
The general 2026 fee is COP 294,000, with separate treatment for Ecuadorian nationals and qualifying Pacific Alliance scholarship holders. Check the official tariff immediately before attending.
Can I pay cash to a Migración employee?
No. Officials are not authorized to receive cash. Use an approved card method or the official bank-payment document.
Do I need an appointment to collect the finished card?
No appointment or intermediary is required for collection. The application and biometric stage normally requires an appointment, which is a different step.
What if the cédula has the wrong name or birth date?
If the visa is correct but the card is wrong, contact Migración Colombia promptly and use the current 30-day post-delivery discrepancy procedure. If the error already appears on the e-Visa, start with Cancillería.
Get the document translation you actually need
Do not translate a routine passport and e-Visa merely because the cédula process feels formal. If your case includes a non-Spanish birth certificate, family record, guardianship order, authorization or correction document, submit the document to CertOf for scope and formatting review. You can also review the online ordering process and CertOf’s revision and service framework.
CertOf provides document-translation and formatting support; it does not register visas, obtain government appointments, pay immigration fees or act as Migración Colombia. Before ordering, confirm whether the receiving CFSM requires a Colombian traductor oficial. CertOf should only present a translation as satisfying that local legal category when the assigned translator’s credentials genuinely meet it.
