Birmingham NMC Registration for Overseas Nurses: Documents, Translation and OSCE Preparation
For an overseas-trained nurse in Birmingham, registration is handled by the UK Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), not by a Birmingham licensing office. The local practical challenge is the gap between preparation and assessment: Birmingham has OSCE preparation options, but the NMC’s current approved OSCE providers are outside the city. If your first OSCE is in Northampton, your in-person identity check takes place there too, so original documents and any required certified English translations need to be ready before you travel.
- No Birmingham NMC office or OSCE centre: applications are handled nationally through the NMC; its current nursing OSCE list names Northampton, Leeds and Ulster University.
- Local preparation is not the official exam: City College Birmingham advertises OSCE training, but it is not an NMC test centre.
- Plan for the first OSCE as a document appointment too: the NMC schedules an overseas-route ID check on the day of your first OSCE. Missing originals or incomplete documents can mean another in-person visit at your own expense.
- Budget nationally and locally: the NMC currently lists £1,226 for the route including first CBT and OSCE sittings, if both are required. Travel, translation, accommodation and optional preparation courses are additional.
Who this guide is for
This guide is for internationally educated registered nurses who live in Birmingham or the wider West Midlands, or plan to seek work with a Birmingham-area employer, and are preparing to join the UK NMC register. It focuses on the documents, certified English translation and local preparation or employer steps that can affect a Birmingham-based applicant. It does not cover midwives, nursing associates or other professions regulated by bodies such as HCPC; each has a separate registration route.
A typical file set may include a passport, nursing qualification certificate, transcripts or course evidence if requested, overseas nursing registration or good-standing evidence, national police certificates, and marriage or other name-change documents where names differ. Some applicants need several translations; others may have little or nothing to translate if their official documents are already in English. Arabic–English, Polish–English, Romanian–English, Spanish–English and other pairs may be relevant, but there is no published Birmingham NMC dataset identifying the most common language pair. Use the languages on your own documents, not assumptions about the city.
Birmingham NMC registration for overseas nurses: what changes locally
The registration standard is national. Birmingham City Council and the West Midlands do not issue a separate nursing licence. The NMC assesses the application and tells each applicant what route and evidence apply. Depending on qualification and individual assessment, a nurse may be asked to complete the Test of Competence, which includes the CBT and OSCE; not every application follows the same sequence. Begin with the NMC’s current overseas registration guide and fee information and follow the tasks shown in MyNMC.
The local difference is what happens around that national application: where you prepare, where you sit the practical exam, how you carry your original records to the appointment, and whether a Birmingham employer has a suitable live vacancy. NMC review time is not a Birmingham queue. No city-specific NMC processing average should be used to plan a move or promise a start date.
Where Birmingham applicants take the OSCE
The NMC’s current list of approved nursing OSCE providers names the University of Northampton, Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and Ulster University. It does not list a Birmingham centre. Previous centres at Oxford Brookes and Northumbria are shown as closed on the NMC page, so use the live list when choosing a location rather than an old advert or training-provider page.
For many Birmingham applicants, the University of Northampton is the practical first centre to check. Its Competence Test Centre is at the Innovation Centre, Green Street, Northampton NN1 1SY, directly opposite Northampton railway station. It is not at the University’s main Waterside campus. The centre lists candidate enquiries at [email protected] and +44 (0)1604 892066; its operations office hours are Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., except bank holidays and University closure days. See the University of Northampton Competence Test Centre page for location and candidate information.
OSCE bookings are made online after the NMC confirms eligibility and provides the candidate’s PRN. The University’s OSCE eligibility and booking guidance explains the booking steps. Check the available dates and travel plan before paying. The Innovation Centre’s rail-side location makes the final leg straightforward, but Birmingham rail schedules, disruption, early exam reporting times and the return journey vary by date. If a same-day trip would leave no margin for disruption, compare another date or the other approved centres instead of assuming a fixed travel time.
The first OSCE is also an in-person identity check
For the overseas Test of Competence route, the NMC says the ID check is scheduled on the day of the first OSCE. The NMC requires the registration application to be submitted and the registration fee paid before the check. You must also bring the required documents in original format, including a valid passport, qualification certificate, prior registration evidence where applicable, name-change evidence where names differ, and certified English translations for documents not originally produced in English. If originals are missing or the application is not ready, the NMC may be unable to complete the check and a further in-person appointment will be needed at the applicant’s expense. Check the current NMC overseas-route ID check requirements before you pack.
This creates a practical Birmingham risk: an online upload is not a substitute for the documents the NMC asks to see in person. Keep your travel folder together and check it against MyNMC, including documents that establish a name chain. Northampton’s candidate booking page also tells candidates to bring a current passport each time and to carry original evidence if their passport name differs from the NMC authorisation. Do not rely on a photo on your phone to replace an original that the NMC asks to inspect.
Which documents need certified English translation?
Translate only the documents the NMC requires that are not already in English or covered by an accepted multilingual standard form. Depending on the individual checklist, that can include qualification records, overseas registration evidence, police certificates and civil records connecting different names. A complete official English version issued by the source authority may mean no translation is needed for that document. IELTS or OET evidence addresses English-language ability; it does not translate a diploma or police certificate.
The NMC’s published standard calls for an official English translation by a legally licensed and authorised translator. It also requires a certified copy of the original-language document and a written confirmation that the translation is exact and direct, with the translator’s full name, address, signature, contact details and stamp. A family member’s translation or machine output alone does not meet that stated standard. Keep the translation linked to the right source document, including seals, stamps, handwritten entries and both sides where relevant. Our concise NMC English translation requirements guide explains the certificate details; the NMC’s document-submission rules remain the controlling source.
A notary stamp or apostille is not a substitute for the translation certification. Do not order extra authentication just for translation unless the NMC or another authority handling a separate document requirement asks for it. For a fuller original-document checklist, see our NMC OSCE ID check and police-clearance guide.
A practical Birmingham-to-registration workflow
- Start with your own NMC route. Open the overseas application information and MyNMC account. Confirm the nursing field, qualification evidence and whether the NMC has asked for a Test of Competence. Do not book a course or OSCE on the assumption that every overseas qualification follows the same path.
- Make a document ledger. List each item, issuing authority, language, name shown, whether it is an original physical document or an official electronic record, and whether the NMC has requested a certified copy, translation or verification directly from the issuer. This helps prevent duplicate translation spending.
- Resolve name differences before booking. If your passport, diploma and overseas registration record use different names, identify the official marriage, divorce or name-change record that connects them. If that record is not in English and the NMC requires it, arrange its certified English translation too.
- Order translation against the NMC request. Give the translator clear scans of every page, including backs, stamps and attachments, and specify the receiving body is the NMC. Ask how the source-language certified copy will be attached, what the certificate includes, and whether you will need a printed set for the in-person check.
- Book only after eligibility is confirmed. When you receive your PRN and authorisation, compare current Northampton, Leeds and Ulster availability. Choose the actual approved test centre in the booking system. A Birmingham preparation course does not create a Birmingham exam slot.
- Pack for both exam and ID check. Use MyNMC’s exact list. Carry the originals the NMC asks for, all relevant name evidence and complete translations. Keep a second digital copy for your own records, but do not treat it as a replacement for required originals.
- Keep registration and employment as separate tracks. Once the NMC process is complete, check your register status and PIN. Then apply for roles whose advert matches your registration status, work permission and experience. An employer may separately carry out right-to-work, DBS, occupational-health and reference checks.
Costs, timing and paperwork delivery
As checked on 5 October 2026, the NMC lists £1,226 for fees and tests where the applicant needs the qualification evaluation, first CBT, first OSCE and initial registration: £167, £83, £794 and £182 respectively. The total is different if a route does not require both tests; resits add cost, with an OSCE resit currently £397 for up to seven failed stations or £794 for eight or more. These are national NMC charges, not Birmingham fees, and do not include translation, travel, accommodation or optional training. The NMC notes that its fees increased on 1 October 2026, so check the linked fee information again before budgeting.
There is no local NMC counter where Birmingham applicants can submit a paper application or ask for a quicker city-level review. NMC application work is online. Do not routinely post original passports or certificates to the NMC; its document guidance says not to send originals because they cannot be returned. The first overseas-route ID check is a separate in-person step where original documents are required. If you order a paper translation, allow time for the provider’s preparation and delivery before your OSCE date; no single postal or NMC review time applies to every applicant.
The main waiting points are the NMC’s review of your own evidence, replies from overseas schools or regulators, available test dates and, later, employer selection. Ask the NMC about your case in MyNMC and check the chosen centre’s live booking system. A Birmingham job start date cannot be calculated from an individual’s online story or a course provider’s advertised duration.
Local preparation and employer routes
City College Birmingham advertises an NMC OSCE training course. Its public course page currently lists a six-month blended format, twice weekly, and a £4,999 fee; it also says applicants need to have passed the CBT. Treat that as an optional commercial preparation offer, not an NMC fee or an official exam booking. Confirm the next start date, in-person venue, cancellation terms, course content and what support is included directly with the college before paying. Completing the course does not confer a PIN or qualify the college to conduct the NMC OSCE.
University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB) is an NHS employer in Birmingham with roles across Good Hope, Heartlands, Queen Elizabeth and Solihull hospitals. It directs applicants to its online recruitment portal for current vacancies. Search current adverts for terms such as pre-registration or internationally educated nurse, and read the person specification closely. Do not treat an older advertisement or programme description as proof that a supported pre-registration post, OSCE funding or a repayment arrangement is available now.
A post advertised as a registered nurse role should not be treated as a route around NMC registration. Before applying, check whether the vacancy requires an active NMC PIN, whether the role is genuinely pre-registration, what duties and supervision apply, and whether any employer support is written into the current advert or offer. NMC registration, visa permission and employer pre-employment checks are separate questions.
Commercial services to compare
The NMC sets translator requirements rather than publishing a Birmingham-only translation-provider shortlist. A Birmingham street address is not evidence of NMC approval. Compare the exact document handling and certificate details, and be cautious if a business claims to be the NMC’s exclusive or officially appointed translator without an NMC source confirming that claim.
| Service | Publicly verifiable scope | What to check before paying |
|---|---|---|
| CertOf online translation service | Translation ordering is online; it is not a Birmingham walk-in office, NMC regulator or employment agency. | Share the NMC request first. Confirm the language pair, certified English certificate details, source-copy handling, delivery format and dispatch timing for your case. |
| City College Birmingham | Advertises OSCE preparation, not official OSCE testing or document translation. Its page lists a six-month blended course at £4,999. | Confirm current availability, venue, fees, cancellation terms and whether a full course suits your gap in preparation. The published page is the provider’s own description, not independent evidence of pass rates. |
For translation orders, you can submit documents through CertOf’s translation portal. Before ordering, review how online ordering works and the options for electronic and paper certified translations. Check the applicable revision and delivery terms for your requested service. CertOf provides translation and document presentation support; it does not assess NMC eligibility, book an OSCE, arrange employment or guarantee registration.
Public and professional support resources
| Resource | Useful for | Boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Nursing and Midwifery Council | Application route, evidence checklist, MyNMC messages, approved OSCE locations and registration decision. | National regulator; there is no Birmingham licensing desk. |
| University of Northampton Competence Test Centre | OSCE booking and candidate logistics at Innovation Centre, Green Street, Northampton NN1 1SY; telephone +44 (0)1604 892066. | Exam and candidate-information centre, not an NMC application assessor or Birmingham facility. |
| UHB recruitment portal | Current vacancies across UHB hospital sites and online applications. | Employer recruitment only; it cannot grant an NMC PIN. |
| Fair Work Agency | England-wide route for problems with employment agencies, pay or work rights. The government page lists an online complaint route and contact details. | Employment enforcement and advice routing, not a decision-maker on NMC document acceptance. |
Recruitment fees and contract warning signs
Be wary of an intermediary who promises a guaranteed Birmingham NHS position, asks for a payment to secure a job, or presents a large training or relocation charge as a condition of getting work. UK employment-agency rules prohibit charging work-seekers a fee for work-finding services; separately offered services are subject to different restrictions. Keep the advert, messages, invoice, contract, payment record and any repayment clause. The UK overseas nurse recruitment guide explains common fee and contract concerns. For a problem involving an employment agency or work rights in England, use the Fair Work Agency’s official contact and complaint routes, which include an online form for these issues. For free employment-rights advice, contact Acas. Seek advice before signing a repayment clause you do not understand.
A translation firm, OSCE course provider and recruiter solve different problems. A course cannot certify a translation; a translator cannot secure an NHS vacancy; and no private provider can guarantee that the NMC will approve a qualification. Keep separate quotes, contracts and receipts for each service.
What candidate experiences can and cannot tell you
The University of Northampton publishes candidate feedback from its own evaluation survey: among respondents who sat OSCEs between July and December 2024, 99% said they agreed or strongly agreed that they were treated with respect, and 99% said they received effective support and guidance on the day. This is useful local-centre context, but it is provider-published, limited to respondents and from a stated period. It is not a pass rate, a Birmingham applicant satisfaction estimate or evidence about current travel disruption.
In a Reddit discussion about NMC registration for a foreign-trained nurse, one participant described taking seven months to obtain a PIN and a further two months for interviews, paperwork and starting hospital work. This is an individual account, not a Birmingham estimate or a reliable forecast for a current applicant. Read it as a reminder that registration and hiring are separate clocks. For Birmingham, rely on your MyNMC case status, current centre availability and live employer adverts.
Common questions from Birmingham applicants
Is there an NMC OSCE test centre in Birmingham?
No. The NMC’s current nursing OSCE list names the University of Northampton, Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and Ulster University. Check the live NMC list when booking because centres can change.
Where is the nearest NMC OSCE centre for Birmingham nurses?
The University of Northampton centre is the first location many Birmingham applicants should check. It is at the Innovation Centre on Green Street, opposite Northampton railway station, not the main Waterside campus. Compare current test dates and rail plans before booking.
Can I prepare for the OSCE in Birmingham?
Yes, local preparation is advertised by City College Birmingham, but preparation and the official exam are different services. Confirm the course’s current dates, venue and terms. You still need an NMC-authorised OSCE centre for the test.
Can I work as a registered nurse in Birmingham before my PIN is issued?
Do not assume so. A registered-nurse vacancy will normally specify the required NMC registration status. A genuine pre-registration or support role is different; read the duties, supervision and eligibility requirements in the actual advert and confirm anything unclear with the employer.
Which documents need certified English translation for NMC registration?
Translate the non-English documents requested in your individual NMC checklist, such as a qualification record, overseas registration evidence, police certificate or name-change document. The translation must meet the NMC’s translator and certification rules. English-language evidence does not replace document translation.
Does UHB currently offer pre-registration jobs or OSCE funding?
Do not assume that it does. UHB’s recruitment portal is the source for current vacancies. Older international-nurse initiatives are not a promise of a present post, course or funding package.
How long does NMC registration take for someone in Birmingham?
There is no separate Birmingham NMC processing queue. Timing depends on your route, complete evidence, verification responses and any required tests; OSCE availability and employer recruitment add separate waits. Check MyNMC and the chosen centre’s current booking calendar rather than relying on a city average.
Who do I contact if an agency charges me to find a nursing job?
Save the written offer, invoice and messages, then use the Fair Work Agency’s online route for employment-agency or work-rights problems. Its page also lists telephone and email details; Acas provides free employment-rights advice.
Next step: prepare only the documents your NMC case requires
Start with the checklist in MyNMC. If a requested document is not in English, send a clear complete copy for review and ask for a certified English translation in the format the NMC requires. If your records are already issued in English, do not pay to translate them again. CertOf can help with translation, certification details and document presentation, but the NMC decides whether your evidence and qualification meet its registration rules.
For a broader overview of the overseas nurse process and shared document issues, see our Bristol overseas nurse registration guide. Birmingham’s defining practical difference is the local preparation and employer ecosystem paired with an out-of-city official OSCE and ID check.
